OBITUARY: In Salem, at the family residence, 451 Marion street, Caroline A., wife of Capt. D. C. Howard, aged 62 years, 6 months and 21 days.
The deceased was born in Pittsburg, Penn., on May 12, 1831. Her maiden name was Hatfield and in 1847 in Irontown, Ohio, she and Mr. Howard were joined in marriage. To the eight children have been born, six of whom are living, Wm. And George residing at Riverside, Wash., Joseph E., Silas E. and Mrs. Carrie Burley, of Salem, and Hattie Phillips, wife of J. T. Phillips of the Pacific Journal published at Ilwaco. She was the grandmother of thirty-six children and of these twenty-seven are living.
The direct cause of her death was heart trouble, though she had been ill for several weeks.
The funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 1 p. m. today, Rev. Grannis of the Methodist church officiating.
