Mar. Co. Adm. Notice of estate 19 Feb to 5 Mar 66, F. M. Rice, admin. "Four McBee brothers started from Missouri to Oregon with the 1852 covered wagon immigration; two, Levi and Thomas, died on the plains, and John became a prominent pioneer here. The other brother, William, spent the first winter in Marion county and settled in Benton county, seven miles south of Corvallis. John McBee started across the plains, he put $5,000 into his outfit; had 16 yoke of oxen and four wagons. So many men of John McBee's company started across the plains poorly equipped, or suffered losses on the way that, out of the 16 yoke of good oxen and four large, fine wagons with which he started, when he arrived at The Dalles he had two wagons and only two yoke of oxen. He did not have the heart to refuse aid to unfortunate fellow travelers on the way, even though impoverishing himself. At The Dalles, he traded a yoke of oxen and $10 in money for a sack of flour. The whole company unloaded the heavier freight and took it down the Columbia on a raft. The raft struck a rock in the stream and the jar threw out part of the freight. In this way, the McBees lost a chest that contained the family records. The rest of the company came by way of the Barlow road over the Cascades and into the Willamette valley. The McBee family settled near Halls Ferry and after a year moved to the hills south of Salem, near Liberty.
