OBITUARY:
FLAMES TAKE SALEM CHILD; LITTLE LOIS HOFFNELL IS BURNED AT HOME YESTERDAY MORNING
Twenty-Two Months Old - Steps on Match - Dies Five Hours Later;
Young Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Hoffnell, Church Street, Meets With Sad Accident.
Mother Hears Cries and Finds the Little One Wrapped in Flames.
With her tender body frightfully burned and charred, little Lois Hoffness, aged only 22 months, yesterday lived five hours in agony and then died shortly after 2 o’clock at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Hoffnell, 145 South church street. Death came after practically five hours of agony, the accident happening between 9 and 10 o’clock in the morning. According to a statement of Dr. J. N. Smith the sudden death was caused more from shock than from the burns. The flesh on the hips, on the abdomen, and about the throat was burned hard and crisp. Had the child survived the shock to the nervous system it would inevitably have succumbed to the burns. Little Lois was in a room with her baby sister, but a few months old, while the mother was attending to work in another part of the house. The mother heard a scream and hastened to the scene. When she entered the room she saw her daughter wrapped in flames. With rare presence of mind the mother snatched a rug and hastily smothered the fire. Her efforts were too late, for the little body had been burned beyond all human help.
MOTHER’S HANDS BURNED.
In her struggle with the flames the mother’s hands were badly burned. Mrs. Hoffnell bore up well under the strain, though tragedy and sorrow came with crushing force to cast a gloom over her and her husband’s hearts. Mrs. Hoffnell could not tell exactly how the accident happened. The direct facts of the tragedy will probably never be known as there was no eye witness except the baby, who is too young to talk. It is believed, however, that Lois climbed onto the table, where there was a case of matches. She had been playing with these and stepped on one, which ignited and set her clothes on fire. She screamed but the fire spread rapidly, and before the mother arrived the flames had done their work. IN SALEM A YEAR.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoffnell have been in Oregon about two years, coming from Kansas to Newberg. A year ago they came to this city. Mr. Hoffnell was first employed by the Spaulding Logging company. He is a civil engineer and draughtsman, and later went into the service of the state under State Forester F. A. Elliot. He is now engaged in making a set of township maps under the state land board. Funeral services over the body will be held this morning at 11 o’clock at the home of F. A. Elliot, 145 South Church street. The services will be private. Mr. Hoffnell will take the body to Abilene, Kan. [sic], his former home, this afternoon for interment. Lois was born at Newberg. Rev. Richard N. Avison will conduct the services.
