OBITUARY:
A CHINESE FUNERAL-- The Chinese woman, Susie, who has been at Jim Toy’s, on State street, for several years died at 8 o’clock Saturday night, after an illness of two years, and was buried with Celestial pomp Sunday afternoon.
A very fine casket held her body and the funeral ceremony at the Rural cemetery was pretentious. The conventional roast pig, chicken, etc., were deposited on the newly made grave, while the wax tapers flickering flames added their mite to the weird scene. Chinese gin was left about the grave and many pieces of fireworks exploded, all of which was for the devil--the former to win his good graces by the tickling of his palate, and the latter to scare him away.
