OBITUARY: OREGON'S OLDEST MASON DEAD.
Colonel John C. Bell, a prominent Oregon pioneer, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Albert Davis, Thirty-second and Franklin streets.
Colonel Bell was known as the oldest Mason in the state and had been affiliated with that order since 1837. Colonel Bell was born in Mount Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky, February 24, 1814. At the age of 20 he moved to Missouri with his parents, where he purchased a farm and engaged in the raising of tobacco. After spending five years in Missouri, he went to New Orleans, where he remained for two years. From New Orleans he returned to Missouri locating in Pike County and remaining there for ten years.
In 1845 he was married to Sarah E. Ward, who survives him.
In 1850 Colonel Bell crossed the plains to Oregon, leaving his family in Missouri. From Oregon he went to the goldfields of California and later conducted a packtrain from Salem to Yreka, California. He had charge of a store in The Dalles for one year and built the first house at that place, before the Government forts had been constructed.
In 1854 Colonel Bell returned to Missouri to bring his family to Oregon. While on the second trip he, with his family, witnessed an Indian massacre of an emigrant train, and themselves barely escaped. On reaching Oregon with his family, Colonel Bell opened a general merchandise store in Salem, remaining there until 1870. After selling his business in Salem he retired from active life until his appointment by President Cleveland as postmaster of Astoria. In 1890 he removed to Portland, where he has since resided. While living in Weston County, Missouri, Colonel Bell aided Colonel Donavan in recruiting the army of General Price and other armies sent to Mexico. He was appointed lieutenat-colonel under Colonel Donovan and rendered valuable assistance to the American Army.
To Colonel and Mrs. Bell were born ten children, six of whom are still living. There are: Mrs. J. H. D. Gray, Mrs. S. Z. Mitchell, Mrs. Robert E. Davis, Mrs. C. M. Maxwell, Wm. T. Bell and Albert E. Bell. Funeral services will be held from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Robert E. Davis, at 3:30 P.M. today. His remains will be taken to Salem for interment.
