BIOGRAPHICAL (Source - Information from Betty Kurtz and written for the Friends of Pioneer Cemetery annual Newsletter by Elisabeth Walton Potter):
Prudence was born in 1909 in Salem. Her paternal forebears, the Painters, were overland pioneers of 1850 from Missouri. Her great grandfather, Philip Painter, having died on the trail, left his widow, Jane Moore Painter, and son William to take up separate land claims which they settled in 1852 in Washington County.
Prudence's grandparents were Robert M. and Ella (Zeiber) Painter. Her father, Philip Zeiber Painter (1863-1924), a nephew of Asahel Bush, moved with his parents to Salem at a young age and became a farmer. He married Clema Jane White (1878-1970), daughter of Waldo Hills pioneers James F. and Elizabeth K. (Heater) White.
Philip and Clema had twelve children, nine of whom lived to maturity and of whom Prudence was the youngest daughter. Demure, courteous, and kind, she was married first to Eugene R. Flesher of Salem. Her only child, Prudence Jean, died in infancy in 1931. She was later married to Frank Johnston, a professional golfer. The Johnstons lived in California until Johnston's retirement in the 1970s, at which time they relocated to Salem to be nearer Prudence's older sister, Phyllis, and other family members. Prudence Painter Johnston was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Following her death in January, 2005, she was buried in the Painter family plot in Salem Pioneer Cemetery."
