OBITUARY:

CROSSES OVER
VENERABLE PIONEER LADY OF MARION COUNTY BIDS FAREWELL TO EARTH
After Most Useful Life of Eighty-Six Years, Nancy Ward Belt Expires of Natural Causes
Funeral at 1 p.m. on Monday.
Nancy Ward Belt died at the home of Geo. H. Burnett at 8 o'clock Saturday evening, September 16, 1905. She was born in Kentucky, June 17, 1819, and on her sixteenth birthday was married to Dr. Alfred Belt.
In their early married life they moved to Missouri and thence to Oregon, crossing the plains with ox teams in 1850. They came directly to Marion county and soon settled in Salem, where her husband built the third house on the town plat of the city. Excepting a year's sojourn in The Dalles and Independence, Mrs. Belt has lived continuously in Salem since 1850--more than half a century, during which she has witnessed the entire growth of the city from a mere village to its present population.
Her husband died in August, 1881, and for more than twenty-four years she trod life's pathway alone except for the ministrations of her family.
In the early days she dispensed with her husband true Kentucky hospitality to all who had the good fortune to come beneath her roof. For many years she was a leading member of the Episcopal church and died a communicant of that faith. She always had rugged health and her death was due to natural decay of her mental and physical powers. For more than two years she has had the kindest care of loving daughters and a faithful nurse, who have tenderly led her to her journey's end.
Her surviving children are Mrs. S. E. Huelat, Salem; Mrs. Emily N. Yean, Mountain View, Cal.; Alfred M. Belt, Vallejo, Cal.; John D. Belt, Sheridan; B. F. Belt, Redding, Cal.; George W. Belt, Spokane, Wash.; Mrs. Miriam Burnett, Salem, and Charles F. Belt, Dallas. An only sister, Mrs. John C. Bell, of Portland, ten years her junior, also survives her.
The funeral will be at 1 o'clock in the afternoon of Monday, the 18th inst., from the residence of George H. Burnett, 385 High Street.
