OBITUARY:
SALEM - Ron ‘Pops’ MacDonald passed away in his sleep on December 20, 2005 after battling a long illness. He was warmly embraced by the love of his family in his final days and comforted by his favorite songs of Elvis, Neil Diamond and Louis Armstrong.
Ron was born on July 7, 1942 in Portland, Oregon, the first of Jack and Marge MacDonald’s three sons. He graduated from St. Ignatius Elementary School, Central Catholic High School, the University of Portland and Willamette University College of Law. Ron’s first job after becoming a lawyer was an Assistant District Attorney for Marion County, and from there he continued in private legal practice in Salem for nearly 30 years before becoming in-house counsel for the business owned by his longtime friends, Tom and Ginger Carpenter. Ron loved the practice of law, and he cherished the professional challenges and dear friendships he gained from it.
Ron married Mary Susan Gill of Portland in 1966 and together they raised four children in Salem. Pops, as he is affectionately known by his six grandchildren, found great joy in the activities of his children and loved raising his family in the Salem environment. Ron loved traveling to new and favorite places, particularly a tropical island, and making special experiences possible for his family. He and Mary divorced in 1997, but spent the last few years enjoying the warm friendship they first formed in high school.
Pops is survived by his son, Brian MacDonald, daughter-in-law, Poppy, and grandson, Gill of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Molly Brundage, son-in-law, Jimmy, and grandchildren, Jeffrey, Macy and Hank of Bend; daughter, Katie Harmon, son-in-law, Damian and granddaughter, Paige of Spokane, Wash.; daughter, Erin Haworth, son-in-law, Taylor and grandson, Wyatt of Missoula, Mont.; and brothers, Larry and Terry MacDonald of Portland.
At his request, a private celebration of Ron’s life will be held in the coming weeks. Ron frequently told his loved ones, “Please don’t fuss over me, and just remember me by playing, What a Wonderful World, while you’re looking at the sunset on the ocean.”
Ron and his fantastic sense of humor, resilient approach to life, fun sense of adventure and loving dedication to helping others will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Willamette Valley Hospice in Salem. Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home.
