OBITUARY:
Sol Durbin, 96 years old, died of natural causes on July 22, 2010. Born May 1, 1914 he grew up in Portland, Oregon, where he attended elementary and high schools before entering college at Oregon State College (University). In 1939, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering before joining the United States Army during WWII. Sol put his engineering skills to good use, working on ships at Bremerton Naval Base in Washington State.
Sol wed Helen Thompson of Washington on March 20, 1937, and they moved to Menlo Park, California, a suburb of San Francisco. They raised their daughter, Diane, while Sol pursued his long career with the U.S. government's Army Corps of Engineers. He and Helen divorced in 1984. Sol married Emalee Ewing Philpott of Virginia in 1985 and moved to Corvallis, Oregon.
Sol was very fond of travel in his recreational vehicle, and in his retirement years he visited national parks, museums and historic sites as well as his friends and relatives throughout the country.
Sol Durbin's final resting place is in Salem, Oregon at Pioneer Cemetery with many of his ancestors including his Great, great grandparents John and Sarah Durbin who came over the Oregon Trail in 1845. He was preceded in death by Emalee in 2005 and Helen in 2009. He is survived by his daughter and his brother, Capt. Fred W. Durbin of Menlo Park, California.
