OBITUARY:

BERRY
The Well-Known Pioneer Passed Away Last Night as a Result of Heart Failure
At his home on High street, Friday evening, February 21, 1896, Matthew Berry, in the 69th year of his age. Many a genuine sigh of sorrow will be caused to readers of the Statesman by the announcement which tells them this morning that good, kind old "Uncle Matt" Berry has passed away and that his cheerful and friendly greeting will be heard no more on this side of eternity.
Though complaining a little for some days, Mr. Berry was not known to be ill and was down to Gray Bros.’ store as usual during the day and evening and displayed perhaps even more than his wonted cheerfulness, and after going home, Mrs. Davis, who with her family lives in his property at 294 High street, says he continued unusually lively and jovial up to the time he retired. But after being in bed some time he arose, dressed and came down stairs, saying he was very sick and he did not believe he was going to live long; that he was smothering. He tried to lie down on a lounge but that caused greater pain so he sat in a chair, where he expired without a struggle about 11 o’clock, heart disease having done its unerring work.
Mr. Berry was a native of Indiana, and there he spent his youth. He came across the plains to California in 1840, and experienced the vicissitudes of a miner’s life, one of his most intimate working partners a portion of the time being Leland Stanford. Later he went back to the states and in 1865 he came to Salem with G. W. Gray and family and has lived here since that time. He never married. Mrs. G. W. Gray and Mrs. G. G. VanWagner of this city are his sisters, as was also Mrs. Judge J. J. Shaw, deceased. A brother resides at Dayton, Washington, and he was notified by telegraph of the death last night.
Having sufficient means to allow of no uneasiness as to his worldly condition, Mr. Berry has taken life easy for some years. He had a platform scales to which he devoted his attention, weighing loads of hay, grain, etc., and always had a jolly word for everybody. He made his headquarters at the store of his nephews, the Gray Brothers, where he sat and read and smoked and passed his time pleasantly.
All who knew him had a warm liking for Mr. Berry and he was universally esteemed as an honorable, upright man in every respect. Funeral announcement will be made later. He will probably be buried from the First Baptist church Sunday afternoon.
Oregon Statesman 22 February 1896 5:2
