1880 CENSUS - Sophia Brey, age 56, b. Bavaria, is enumerated with husband M. Brey, age 65, b. Hesse Cassel, occupation cabinet maker, along with children Ernestina, age 25, b. Oregon, Geo. E., age 22, b. Oregon, occupation bookkeeper, and Clara, age 17, b. Oregon. 
PROBATE - File #1581 Testate. Sophia Brey d. 25 March 1895 in Salem. Will was written on Oct. 29, 1894, indicating she was a widow. Clara F. Brey was named executrix on July 24, 1895. Heirs were: Clara F. Brey, daughter age 32 of Salem, Ernestina Brey daughter and confirmed invalid (died a few days after mother), Andrew C. Brey son age 46 address unknown, Sophia Chance age 51 of Portland, Philopine Warner age 49 of Salem, George E. Brey age 37 of Independence and William M. Brey age 34 of San Francisco, California.

OBITUARY: 

At the family home, Cottage and Union streets, Salem, Monday, March 25, 1895, Sophia, relict of M. Brey, aged 71 years, 6 months and 10 days. The deceased was born in Germany September 15, 1823, her maiden name being Sophia White. She came to the United States when a mere child and in 1853 came to Oregon with her husband, M. Brey, who preceded her to the Great Beyond last May. She will be buried by his side in Odd Fellows’ Rural cemetery. 
She had been seriously ill for some time and had the most tender care from the several members of her family who were in attendance. Arrangements for the funeral will be made today and due notice will be given.

BREY -- At the family home on Cottage and Union streets, Monday, March 25, Sophia, widow of M. Brey, aged 71 years, 6 months. Deceased was a native of Germany, maiden name Veith, came to this country at the age of six, lived at Cincinnatti and was married at Peoria, Illinois, in 1841 to Moritz Brey. They came to Oregon in 1855, crossed the plains, and located at Salem, where the family have made their home. Mrs. Brey was the mother of ten children, seven of whom survive the parents. Mr. Brey died May 17th, 1894, and was buried at Odd Fellows’ cemetery. Moritz Brey was a fine mechanic, a furniture manufacturer at this city, and left quite a large property. 
Mrs. Brey was an attendant of the Episcopal church, but a member of the Lutheran church. Rev. Lawrence Sinclair, of St. Paul’s Episcopal church, conducts the funeral Thursday at 2 o’clock p.m. Mrs. Brey was a woman who went out in society very little but was much attached to her home and family, who sincerely mourn her death. 
The estate consists of valuable city property and amounts to a considerable sum. It includes one half of the Bush-Brey block, which is occupied by the Dalrymple and Krausse stores.

BURIAL TOMORROW -- The funeral of Mrs. Sophia Brey will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock at the family residence southwest corner of Cottage and Union streets. Rev. Laurence Sinclair of St. Paul’s Episcopal church will officiate.
