John Brooks died at the Salem hospital yesterday morning at 8:20 o'clock after a lingering illness of more than a year. He was born in Hart county, Kentucky, March 7, 1824. He was married April 9, 1848, to Martha Rebecca Harper, who died in Salem sixteen years ago. Immediately after their marriage, Mr. Brooks and his bride left their Kentucky home and moved to Harrison county, Missouri. They lived at Missouri sixteen years. In 1864 they immigrated to Oregon, traveling by ox team across the plains. They located in Marion county, settling on a farm near the state fair grounds, where they lived for many years. To Mr. and Mrs. Brooks were born twelve children, eight of whom are still living, as follows: Mrs. E. P. Hodnett, Mrs. R. H. Leabo and Miss Lenore Brooks of Portland; J. H. and Dr. F. M. Brooks of Silverton; C. C. Brooks of San Francisco; E. A. and Dr. B. F. Brooks of Washington state. The eldest son, William W. Brooks, who was at one time superintendent of the Sunday school of the First Baptist church of this city and afterward editor of the Pacific Baptist of Portland, died two years ago last May. Mr. Brooks was converted in early life and united with the Baptist church. Shortly after coming to Oregon he united with the First Baptist church of this city, of which he was a faithful member until the time of his death, serving the church as deacon for many years. The funeral will be held at the First Baptist church at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon, to which all friends are invited. Friends who wish to see the remains are invited to call at the home of his son, J. H. Brooks, North Winter street, as the casket will not be opened at the church.
