OBITUARY:  FALLS TO HIS DEATH OVER MOUNTAIN CLIFF.  AGED BOOK PEDDLER IS KILLED AT DETROIT BY SLIPPING OVER BLUFF.  An aged book agent, Levi Brothers, of Echo, Oregon, met with a horrible death by falling over a forty foot precipice at Detroit, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon. Coroner A. M. Clough of this city was summoned at once by telephone, and only upon returning last night from the scene of the accident were particulars obtainable.  It is said that Brothers, who was about 60 years of aged, had been drinking heavily at Detroit, and upon the afternoon of the tragedy had seated himself within a few feet of an embankment that made a sharp decent to the creek bed below. This was at a point a few hundred yards above the store at Detroit, and a party consisting of a Mr. Ottison and John Dinsmoore, of Detroit, and Prince Byrne of this city, seeing the man's perilous position, went to him and urged him to go further back from the cliff, but he ordered them away, saying that he could take care of himself. After leaving him, which they did reluctantly, they discussed his perilous situation and concluded to go back and remove him by force. They returned quickly, only to find that Brothers had disappeared and his body was found lying still in death far below. His tracks showed that apparently in an effort to rise and walk away, one foot had slipped a little, and the bank had caved, letting him down on his feet to a narrow ledge below, where he fell backward and was hurled to his death on the sharp rocks at the bottom of the cliff. The body was horribly mangled, the skull being broken in many places. Boards were fastened together and two men of the party were lowered over the edge of the precipice, and the mangled remains of the dead man were drawn up.  The coroner returned with the body last night, and after a careful investigation of the contents of the dead man's pockets and canvassing sack disclosed nothing further than that his name was Levi Brothers, and that he was employed by the Crowell, Kirkpatrick Company, of Springfield, Ohio, to canvas for the "Woman's Home Companion" and "Peerless Atlas of the World." While letters in his pockets had been sent to various Idaho towns, and Philomath, Roseburg, and other Oregon addresses, Echo, Oregon seems to have been his headquarters, and the coroner will telegraph there today for any possible information concerning the dead man before burying him.  Daily Oregon Statesman 19 Jul 1907 1:4.
