A. J. Brown was yesterday awarded the contract by the Capitol Commissioners to do the wrought-iron and blacksmith work on the Capitol buildiing. Mr. Brown will use convict labor that he as been using for Hawley, Dodd & Co. Mr. Brown is a skillful workman and overseer, and the work will be done in a workmanlike manner.  Oregon Statesman 7 Apr 1875, 3:3. COMMITTMENT: Commitment to Asylum - Jack Brown, an old-time resident of this city, was yesterday examined before Judge Scott by Dr. F. Smith on a charge of insanity, and committed to the asylum. Brown's mental derangement is said to be due to the use of alcohol. He was arrested Saturday evening in an intoxicated condition. Brown is well known in Salem, where he formerly was an enterprising blacksmith. Daily Capital Journal 31 Dec 1907, 8:4-5 OBITUARY:  Died in Asylum. "Old Jack Brown", a well known character around town, died at the asylum yesterday. Brown was an old pioneer of Salem and was commuted to the asylum less than a year ago. He death was the result of a cancer of several years standing. The remains were interred in the I. O. O.
