OBITUARY:

DOUBLE DEATHS MAKE TRAGEDY FOR WALDPORT.
Warren Burtis, Former Salem man Kills Sister-in-law, then self.
Wife and Children in Salem for Fair; was Master Mechanic Here
WALDPORT, Ore., Sept. 6--(AP)
Warren Burtis, 46, apparently shot and killed his sister-in-law, Opal Gillespie, 35, Waldport high school teacher, here tonight and then turned his gun upon himself, inflicting wounds that prove fatal, state police said after an investigation. Mrs. Mary Gillespie, mother of the teacher, told officers that she was in the yard feeding rabbits, after a meal that passed without any untoward incident, when she heard shots and saw her daughter stagger out the front door and fall dead. Burtis died within two hours.
Mrs. Burtis and two children, Vincent 17, and Lavonia 19, were in Salem yesterday, Mrs. Burtis was attending the fair and the children were visiting the Eyerley family at the airport. When word of the deaths came the children picked up the mother and returned to Waldport.
The Burtis family is very well known here. Warren Burtis was master mechanic at the state highway shops for a number of years; later worked at the airport. The children attended school in Salem, the daughter being a student in high school year before last. The parents of Burtis live near Shaw, the father H. W. Burtis, being present night watchman at the state highway shops. Miss Gillespie is also reported to have relatives here.
