Brown history shows a William Alfred Carter married to, Ethel Berta Hughes, and dying in 1967 in Portland. There is also another William Alfred Carter Jr. in this Lot who dies in 1971, who is his son. 
BIOGRAPHICAL: (From HISTORY OF THE BENCH AND BAR IN OREGON)"
William A. Carter Residence 296 Poplar street; office, 601-2-3 Corbett building, Portland. Born June 7, 1874 in Greene County, Tennessee. Son of Louis A. and Sara J. (Carter) Carter. Married December 31, 1901, to Ethel Hughes. Early education received in the public school of Tennessee; at the High School at Willow Springs, Missouri, and at Business College in the same city. Moved to Gold Hill, Jackson Sounty, Oregon, in 1892, and read law in the office of Hon. J. L. Hammersly. Admitted to the bar at Salem in June, 1899, and practiced at Gold Hill in association with Hon. J. L. Hammersly until 1908, when he removed to Portland and became associated with Hon. E. B. Dufur, under the firm name Carter & Dufur, which continues to date. Admitted to the Circuit and District Court of the United States on December, 1908. Memer State Bar Association and Multnomah Bar Association. Was City Recorder of Gold Hill 1894 to 1899. Elected Member of Legislature from Jackson County, Oregon, 1900, Member Masonic and I.O.O.F. Fraternities. Republican.

OBITUARY: 

William A. Carter--Funeral for William A. Carter, Sr., 1556 SE Poplar Ave., Portland attorney, will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday in the Chapel of A. J. Rose and Son Mortuary. 
Mr. Carter, who was delegate-at-large to the Republican national conventions in 1924 and 1928 from Oregon, was born June 7, 1874, in Green County, Tenn. He died at home Thursday. 
In 1901 he was a representative from Jackson County to the Oregon Legislative Assembly. He had been an attorney in Portland since 1908. He was past grand master of the Oregon Grand Lodge IOOF, Trust Emeritus of IOOF, a life Member of Al Kader Temple No. 959 and Knights Templar, a member of Loyal Order of Moose, first Methodist Church, Oregon State Bar, Multnomah Bar Association, City Club, Portland gun club and Hawthorne Lodge No. 111 AF&AM. Survivors include the wife, Ethel; two sons, John H. and William A. Jr., a daughter, Mrs. Robert J. Marble; a brother, Charles L. Carter of Gresham; and three sisters, Mrs. Virginia Williams, Mrs. Nina Ross, and Mrs. Mathilda Hammersley. Private committal will be at Portland Memorial.
