SALEM TEACHER DIES SUDDENLY WHEN SHE IS STRICKEN WITH APOPLEXY.
"My head hurts," exclaimed Miss Mary A. Childers, 248 North Cottage street, a school teacher in Yew Park school, and fell unconscious shortly before 5 o'clock yesterday in the office of Dr. M. C. Findley, where she died three hours later in the Salem hospital. Miss Childers had called to undergo an operation for removal of her tonsils when she was stricken with apoplexy. She was removed to the Salem hospital. She was 41 years old. Miss Childers is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ida M. Russell, who resides in the Albert apartments, Cottage and Court streets. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Childers, Oregon pioneers, who died some years ago. For 12 years she was a teacher in the Salem schools. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, and of the Artisan lodge, this city. Burial will probably take place Sunday.

AUTOPSY IS HELD.
Death of Miss Childers Laid to Operation.
Salem School Teacher Became Unconscious While Having Tonsils Removed and Did Not Revive.
According to an autopsy held yesterday over the body of Miss Mary A. Childers, well known Salem school teacher, who died Friday, while undergoing an operation for the removal of her tonsils, death was due to a hemorrhage of the brain. It was stated before that an operation had not been performed, but later inquiry shows that a tonsil had been removed and a local anesthetic given, when the patient became unconscious.
Mrs. Ida M. Russell, sister of the dead woman, said yesterday that Miss Childers was in good health, and thinking that the operation would be only a slight one, she went unattended to the office of the physician. She left Mrs. Russell, laughing, at the elevator of the building, telling her to have a light supper ready and they would go to the band concert. About 4:30 p.m. when the operation was half finished, Miss Childers complained that her head hurt and slipped down in the operating chair, unconscious. She was removed to the Salem hospital a half hour later, where she died without gaining consciousness, at 7:45 p.m.
A sister and a friend who had been awaiting her arrival for supper arrived at the hospital just before her death. Many friends attended the funeral of Miss Childers, which was held on Sunday afternoon from the chapel of Rigdon & Richardson, with Rev. James Elvin officiating. There were many beautiful floral offerings, with emblematic pieces from the Salem schools, Artisan lodge, Westminster Presbyterian guild and Sacred Heart academy. Mrs. W. Carlton Smith sang. Interment was in the mausoleum at City View [sic] cemetery. The pallbearers were: Supt. O. M. Elliot, U.S. Dotson, E. A. Miller, M. Davis, G. R. Bonnell and J. F. Axley.
