OBITUARY:
LOUIE CHUNG'S FUNERAL TODAY; OBSEQUIES TO BE CONDUCTED ACCORDING TO MONGOLIAN CUSTOM There will be a Chinese funeral in Salem today, held according to Chinese custom. Of course that means that all mourners will receive a lump of brown sugar and 10 cents, as funeral attendants. Besides, the grave will be covered with rice, chickens and other good things to eat and drink. The reason for this observance is that Louie Chung, a Chinese, was found dead Monday morning in his bed over the Chinese restaurant. He was 56 years old and was single.
"Why do you put all those good things which Hoover wants us to save on a grave?" asked a Caucasian of one of the Celestial mourners, "the corpse can't eat them." "Why you put fine flowers on?" replied the Celestial. Then he added, "Man can no smellee them, no eatee 'em." The funeral will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock from Webb & Clough's. The burial will be in the Chinese burial ground in Odd Fellows cemetery. Oregon Statesman 5 December 1917 5:5
