OBITUARY:
DEATH COMES TO ANOTHER PIONEER.
JAMES H. ELGIN PASSES AWAY AT 8:25 LAST NIGHT FROM PARALYSIS.
Gradually the ranks of the real Oregon pioneers are being thinned out by death, the most recent case being the passing of James H. Elgin, one of those who can justly lay claim to having grown up with Salem and being largely responsible for its present prosperity.
Mr. Elgin was born in Lagrange, Tennessee, in 1833, and at the time of his death was therefore seventy-nine years of age. When Mr. Elgin was a baby his parents moved to Missouri, staying there a few years. In 1852 he crossed the plains to Oregon, where he settled down, marrying Josephine Humphries in 1858.
Mr. Elgin served through the Indian wars of 1855 and 1856 and was in the Cascade massacre, where he received wounds. With Rev. P. S. Knight of this city he helped build the wooden railway connecting the two rivers.
For the past two years the death of Mr. Elgin has not been entirely unlooked for by members of his family. Three weeks ago he suffered paralytic shock and since then, two others, the third, last night, resulting fatality. The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock, Saturday, from the home of W. A. Moores, 246 South Cottage street. Rev. P. S. Knight, many years a friend of the deceased, will have charge of the services.
Mr. Elgin is survived by a wife, four sons and three daughters. The daughters are: Mrs. H. H. Hewitt, Albany; Mrs. H. E. Chipman, Portland; and Mrs. H. R. Craven, Dallas. The sons are all residents of this city. They are Charles F., George M., H. W., and C. W.
