OBITUARY:
At the home of his parents, William and Olive S. England, in Salem, on Thursday, December 27, 1888, Eugene A. England, aged 18 years, 9 months and 5 days. This sad summons of the ever unwelcome messenger leaves desolation in the loving hearts of a fond father and mother, who are thus bereft of their only child, their present pride and their hope for life's future. Gene was a bright, lively, robust boy until May, 1887, when he received a fall from a bicycle which injured his spine, and from the effects of which he never fully recovered. A short time afterwards, also, he went on a steamboat trip to Oregon City, during which he over-exerted himself and received a fall on the boat, all of which superinduced hemorrhage of the lungs, which was the cause of his death. He was able to be around the greater part of the time, but was subject to prostration at intervals, and in September last, during the state fair, which out at the grounds, he seized with a very severe attack, and lay in a critical condition for a long time. But he again rallied and was on his feet up to some four weeks ago, when he was confined to his bed until his young life came to a peaceful close at ten minutes before 12 o'clock yesterday morning.
This is a particuliarly sad death. Gifted with manly beauty; endowed with mental talents of a high order; surrounded by every luxury of wealth and ease, and every solicitude that an only son can receive from doting parents, his path of life was spread with an inviting carpet, while his sky was studded with the most brilliant stars. And his teachings and ambitions were such as to carry him to the most desirable goal, had his time been prolonged to the ordinary allotment of man. But the fiat of Providence has gone forth and he is wafted to a shore upon which he had the most earnest hopes of finding a pleasure and a glory that earth cannot curtail or time tarnish. A great consoloation to the bereaved father and mother is the peace, contentment and triumph in which he died, as well as the angelic cheerfulness and patience of his last days. The poet's beautiful lines may wll be applied, for his were: "The sunny temper, bright where all is strife, The simple heart, above all worldly wiles: Light wit that plays along the calm of life, And stirs its languid surface into smiles." He died in complete assurance of eternal happiness, and left the world without a desponding pang.
This entire community, among which he was born and lived all his days, mourns Eugene England's early death and will extend to Mr. and Mrs. England the most heart-felt sympathy.

FUNERAL OF 'GENE ENGLAND. The funeral of the late Eugene A. England took place from the family residence, 340 Liberty street, yesterday afternoon. The house was filled with friends of the family and there was a large attendance of friends of the dead boy, who had assembled to pay the last tribute of love and respect to their comrade, school and playmate. The services were very simple and unostentatious in their character, consisting of appropriate music by the choir and a few appropriate words by Rev. P. S. Knight. At the conclusion of the ceremonies the cortege proceeded to the IOOF cemetery, where the remains were interred.
