An Industrius Citizen Who is Well Known
W. A. Evans, who died Wednesday night, October 8, 1902, at 11:30 o'clock, was a native of Wyoming county, Pa., born 29 Apr 1830, and he was 72 years of age. He crossed the plains to Oregon in 1859, fighting Indians most of the way, unil he reached Yamhill county, where he resided until 1874, when he removed to Salem, where he has made his home ever since.
Deceased followed farming all his life, except some years when he went to the British Columbia mining regions, where he met with considerable success. He was always a very hard working man, and last spring, when he was hauling wood out of the timber, he was injured by a limb falling from a tree and striking him over the head, from which he never recovered, but was a sufferer until his death. He leaves three sons, Roscoe, who resides in Portland; John, who resides at Hoquiam, Wash., and Chas. Evans, whi is in the barbering business at Salem.
Mr. Evans was a good hearted man, and an accommodating neighbor, very independent in his opinions, and gererous to a fault. He will be remembered by many of the old pioneers of the Pcific coast. His funeral will be held from the house on West Miller street, South Salem, Friday at 2 o'clock, servicec conducted by Reb. W. S. Gordon, of Leslie M.E. church. Burial at Rural cemetery.
