OBITUARY:
GARDNER - In this city, at 9:30 p.m., Sunday, March 21, 1897, Wm. Gardner, aged 59 years.
Deceased had been a noted saloon character in Salem for thirty-one years. The direct cause of his death was the excessive use of morphine. He had been rooming over the Western saloon in the Fryer block and it was there that his last days were spent. His remains were encased in a plain board coffin adorned with a few silver trimmings to which was added a row of black fringe furnished by Barney Pompelly.
At 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, a hearse, containing the 'last of old Bill,' left Clough’s undertaking rooms for Rural cemetery. It was accompanied by a cab and a hack in which were the pall-bearers and a number of the deceased’s acquaintances . Arriving at that burial place the last rites were performed by the sexton and the undertaker depositing the body in a grave in the county lot.
