GOODALE ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON. The remains of J. D. Goodale, the retired lumber dealer of Salem who died at Sawtele, California, Wednesday, are expected to arrive here Sunday. While no definite arrangements have been made for the funeral, it is thought that it will occur Sunday afternoon. J. C. Goodale, Sr., was for many years a resident of Salem and was well known as a lumberman in the Willamette valley. He was born in New York, 75 years ago. While a young man he went to Michigan and there engaged in lumbering, which occupation he resumed at Hubbard, Oregon, upon coming to this state in 1882. Later he removed to Coburg, Lane county, where he operated a sawmill for 20 years. During the last 15 years he has conducted a lumber yard in this city. Mr. Goodale was a veteran of the civil war, having served in a Michigan regiment which participated in the battle of Shiloh and other engagements. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the order of Odd Fellows. He leaves a widow, three sons and one daughter. The latter are J. C. Goodale, Jr., and C. C. Goodale, Salem; W. D. Knights Templar Also Will Act as Escort in Last Rites for Dead Brother; Ivanhoe Commandery of Eugene Will Arrive at 8:45 and With DeMolay Commandery Will Act as Escort - Funeral at Two o’clock from the Presbyterian Church. The body of the late J. C. Goodale will arrive here on the early train from the south, due here about 5:30 this morning, and will be met by an escort from DeMolay Commandery and escorted to the Masonic asylum in the McCormlep building. The funeral will be held from the Presbyterian church at two o’clock. The Masonic Blue lodges will then take charge and Masonic services will be held at the grave under the direction of Past Grand Master S. M. Yoran of Eugene, on behalf of the Eugene Blue lodge of which the deceased was a member, assisted by the members of Salem lodge No. 4 and Pacific lodge No. 50 of this city. The following obituary on James C. Goodale published in the Chesaning Argus, of Chesaning, Michigan, the home of the deceased, may interest the many friends he left in this city: James C. Goodale Dead. Word has reached us of the death of James C. Goodale, which took place April 2, at Sawtelle, Cal., where he was on his way home to Salem, Oregon, from Savannah, Georgia, where he had been spending several weeks visiting. He leaves a wife and four children, four of whom reside in Oregon, and Mrs. Rose Goodale-Wallace, of St. Charles, Mich. Mr. Goodale had been ailing for several months and went to Georgia with a hope of benefiting his health. Deceased, at the time of his death, was about 80 years old. Mr. Goodale came to Chesaning from Monroe county, Mich., about the year 1859. He figured prominently in business matters here for several years. At one time he was proprietor of the old Chesaning House, located where Hotel Central now stands. For a time in connection with the hotel he ran a mercantile business. He built a store building on the east side of the river and moved the store business into it. Some time afterward the store, together with several buildings, burned. At the time of the incorporation of the village, April 12, 1869, Mr. Goodale was elected as one of the councilmen. He was also a charter member of the Chesaning Lodge, No. 103 I.O.O.F., and built for the order a hall on the location where M. L. Parshall’s residence now stands. The building was first built three stories and before completion blew down. It was afterward rebuilt, two story, and remained on the corner up to a few years ago, when it was sold for a wareroom and moved near the M. C. R. R. track, and a year or two after burned. During his residence here, Mr. Goodale was the proprietor of a sawmill located on the west side of the M. C. R. R. track from the Cantwell warerooms. The year 1879, Mr. Goodale left Chesaning and located in Grayling, and engaged in the lumbering business. A few years later he left Grayling for Oregon to seek a new home and soon became interested in the lumber business. His first wife died before he left Chesaning, and he was married again. The second wife died in Oregon a few years later, and for his third wife he married Mrs. Mary Merrill, a sister of his first wife. The funeral was held by the Masonic order at his late home in Salem, Oregon, Sunday, April 5, from the First Presbyterian church. Rev. Babcock delivering the sermon.
