Salem, by "falling down stairs at his son-in-law Fred Rice". OBITUARY:  GUNNISON'S FATAL FALL -- An Ashland Man Breaks His Neck While in Salem.  Yesterday Old C. Gunnison, who lives at Ashland, came in from Portland, where he has been taking treatment at the hospital, and stopped with F. A. Rice, on south High street. He had been ill and was sufficiently recovered to travel, so he started for his home and stopped here to visit his daughter, Mrs. Rice. He went to bed up stairs feeling quite well, and remained there until four o'clock this morning, when the family heard a crash in the hall. On rushing out it was found that Father Gunnison had fallen headlong downstairs. His head struck the wall just above the baseboard, making a large indenture, and the fall broke his neck at the base of the skull. Mr. Rice carried him to a lounge, but life was extinct.  Mr. Gunnison was born in Norway, in 1835, and has lived on this coast many years. He made his home at Jacksonville for some years. Then he was employed by the government at Ft. Klamath and also worked at Klamath agency. He was a cabinet maker and good mechanic, having worked in Ashland of late years. Mrs. Gunnison was buried at the latter place some twelve years ago.  He leaves five children, three of which are here, Mrs. Rice and a younger brother and sister. Miss Edith was married a few weeks ago to Harrison Humphreys, and now resides near Clymer. Deceased was a member of the M.
