OBITUARY:
At his home on Asylum avenue, Sunday, September 2, 1894, Joseph J. Basey, aged nearly 77 years.
Deceased was born in St. Clair county, Illinois, Sept. 10, 1817. After reaching the age of manhood he, with his parents, moved to Des Moines county, Iowa. On November 21, 1839, he and Prudence Ayers were united in wedlock, while residents of that county. Miss Ayers was the daughter of Wm. and Anna Ayers and the latter is still living having reached the age of 94 on January 11th last. The fruits of this union were four sons and one daughter, J. C. of Santa Cruz, A. J. of Salem, W. W. and I. N. of Portland and Mrs. Mary B. Willard of Salem.
In the spring of 1853 Mr. Basey and family with many others came to Oregon in a train captained by one Marcus Lucus. They started with two wagons and six yoke of oxen and four cows. When they reached their destination two yoke of oxen and one cow only were on hand the others having been lost. The party was over five months on the road, starting on the 11th of April and landing at Uncle "Bob" Kinney's place on September 17th. About the 1st of September 1854, Mr. Basey and family proceeded on south stopping at a mining camp near Jacksonville were they remained until fall when they went on to California. This last move was made two days after the massacre in the Siskiyou mountains of the parties which afterwards resulted in the Rogue River war. They stopped at a place twelve miles east of Yreka. While there two births occurred in Mr. Basey's family, both daughters. After making a tour of middle California they returned to Salem and took up their home on a farm in Polk county, nine miles northwest of -----?
In 1874 they sold their place and moved to Salem where their home has since been made. Their daughter Anna C. died while they were camped temporarily at Waconda now known as Gervais; her remains were interred in Rural cemetery. The funeral of Mr. Basey will be held at the residence at 2 p.m. today Rev. G. W. Grannis of the Methodist church officiating.
Mr. Basey was taken ill during last spring and was bedfast for several weeks. He recovered sufficiently to be about among his friends and acquaintances but about ten days ago was again stricken down which reulted in his death. The deceased was a dutiful husband, a loving father and a christian in every sense of the word. He was a great advocate of the temperance cause during his whole life.
