1880 Census of East Salem shows A. W. Kinney, age 37 and his wife Virginia age 30, both born in Oregon, proprietor of flouring mills. The OREGON STATE DIRECTORY of 1881 (pg. 638): SALEM FLOURING MILLS -- This is one of the finest mills on the coast and the largest in the State. It was built in 1865 by the Willamette Woolen Manufacturing Company, and passed into the hands of the late R. C. Kinney and others in 1870. It has now twelve run of burrs and turns out 650 barrels of flour in 24 hours. The granary and storage capacity is large -- fully 520,000 bushels. Salem Flour is justly celebrated for its fine quality with good color. It has a very large and increasing trade all over this coast -- including British Columbia. It also has a very large export trade to england, it being a favorite brand with buyers there. Their "Salem Bakers' Extra" received the highest medal and diploma at the Centennial Exhibition. The agent of the Salem Flouring Mills Company is Albert W. Kinney, Salem. They have a branch office at No. 12 North Front street, Portland. See adv. pg. 630.
