OBITUARY:
At her home in South Salem, Saturday, April 20th, 1889, Sarah A., wife of Prof. M. G. Lane, aged 56 years, 11 months and 6 days. Deceased was the daughter of Joshua and Eleanor Cawood and was born on the 14th of May, 1832, at the head of Big Mouse river, McLinn [McMinn?] county, Tennessee. In August, 1837, the family moved to Morgan county, Illinois, where both her parents died in 1846 and she was left to the care and charge of her older brother, J. C. Cawood. At an early age she became afflicted with nervous tremors or spasms, which troubled her more or less all through life. Her brother came to Oregon in 1853, she remaining in Illinois, and on the 28th day of July 1861, she was married to Melvin G. Lane, the husband who is now bereft of her earthly companionship, and who is completely broken down in grief. She came to Salem in July, 1876, her brother living here, and the family has resided in this county since that time, the past seven or eight years being in south Salem, where Mrs. Lane was much beloved and respected by all with whom she came in contact. Her husband and only son, Melvin C. Lane, survive her, as also her brother spoken of above. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 at the residence in South Salem by Rev. W. Rollins, and interment in the I. O. F. cemetery. Friends and relatives of the family invited. The bereaved husband has the sincere sympathy of his many friends throughout this city and county.
