IOOF - Mrs. Eliza Dearborn, age 77
OBITUARY:
In Salem, May 31, 1885, at the residence of her son, R. H. Dearborn, in the 77th year of her age.
This estimable lady was born in Dayton, Ohio, December 25, 1808. On February 4, 1829, she was married to Richard Dearborn, of Massachusetts, the wedding taking place in Madison, Indiana, whither she had removed.
In the year 1835 Mr. Dearborn died of Cholera on the Mississippi river, while on a business journey to New Orleans. Being left a widow at the early age of twenty-six, her two children became her sole care, and to them she gave her all of life, her time and energies, with a devotion that never faltered, until failing health compelled a withdrawal from active participation in daily routines.
In 1854 she came to Oregon with her family, passing several years in Roseburg, Eugene, and Salem. For a number of years past she has remained with her daughter, Mrs. E. S. Kearney, in Portland, receiving the unremitting care demanded by her enfeebled state.
Several years since she appeared to be losing her hold on life, but no disease developed itself, only a gradual wasting of strength, often suffering greatly until death came as a release. Quiet and unpretentuous in manners, Mrs. Dearborn was held in affectionate esteem by all with whom she came in contact. Her tastes were all refined and womanly, and the tenor of her existence can be judged by the few words uttered prior to her last fatal attack of paralysis, which were of the "children" and "home" -- first and last always in her thoughts.
She was a consistent member of the Methodist church, having joined that communion in her early years, and the funeral ceremonies were conducted at the house of Mr. Dearborn, on Monday, by Rev. Mr. Ware. Mr. Dearborn and family and Mrs. Kearney have the sympathy of their many friends.
