An Oregon pioneer, Mrs. C.M. Parmenter passed away yesterday at 6 a.m. at the home of her son, C. L. Parmenter, 781 North Front street, after a brief illness.
In the death of Mrs. Parmenter Salem loses one of its oldest residents, she having lived here since 1857 residing in two dwellings, 809 and 823 Commercial street, both in the same inclosure, from 1858 to 1913. Mrs. Parmenter’s maiden name was Hannah Pratt. She was born in Webster, Massachusetts, July 5, 1826. She was married to C.M. Pamenter in December, 1851. In 1857 the Parmenter family accompanied by Mrs. Parmenter’s brother, the late Captain L. E. Pratt, and his family, came to Oregon via the Isthmus of Panama, arriving here in June of that year. Mr. Parmenter, who for years conducted a furniture store here and who with the late Captain F. J. Babcock also operated a furniture factory on North Liberty street, died four years ago.
Mrs. Parmenter is survived by her sister Mrs. Emily A Boise, her son, Charles L. Parmenter, of this city, and her daughters Mrs. Emily Cornell, Nellie and Annie Parmenter of Portland. A son, Frank, and a daughter, Mary, preceded her to the great beyond. Mrs. Parmenter was for many years a member of the First Congregational church of this city and one of the active workers in it. She held, and ever lived up to high ideals as a Christian, was a devoted wife and mother, and many there are in this city who have known and loved her these many years who mourn at her death.
The funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the C. L. Parmenter residence, 781 North Front street. Rev. Harry E. Marshall will officiate with interment in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
