OBITUARY:
In this town, on the 29th ult., very suddenly, Mary C., wife of George H. Jones, aged 25. A few hours before her death, (perhaps five) she sang with a tremulous but sweet voice, the first verse and part of the second of the hymn, "Forever here my rest shall be, Close to the bleeding side,.." and engaged in an appropriate vocal prayer. She expressed the great love she bore to the Savior, parents, sister, husband, children, she loved, and loved much -- but she loved Jesus more, far more. She doubted not friends loved her much, but she was sure Jesus loved her more. There was no dread about dying. Calm as she would prepare to take a brief journey, and would speak of it, she spoke of dying. Sister Jones leaves two daughters, one of them but a few days old, and a step-son, a lad of ten years, to miss and mourn her loss. They were commended in her dying prayers to her heavenly Father. P.

GRAVEMARKERS BEARING STONECUTTER’S IDENTIFICATION
Freshly-cleaned marble grave marker with segmental-arched cornice for Mary C. Jones (1832-1857), daughter of the Rev. David and Mary A. Kinney Leslie, wife of George Hosmer Jones (1822-1904), prominent Salem real estate investor. Mary died at the age of 25 from complications following childbirth, it seems. Her only child (David Leslie’s only grandchild), Mary Genella Jones, was born April 14, 1857, two weeks before her mother’s death. The grave stone, doweled to its high base, had been toppled and lying on the ground for some years (see 1980s photos), was retrieved and recently remounted professionally. The shaping of the die is especially fine. The signature of the stone cutter is found in the lower right corner of the epitaph (west) face:
“See & Mape[s?]/N.Y.” A chip from the lower right edge of the die obscures what may be the final character of the second surname of the New York stone cutting firm.
See & Mapes was confirmed as a brokerage firm in Manhattan in an 1857 business directory by the New York Public Library Division of U.S. History, Local History & Genealogy, Jan. 9, 2013. The partners were William S. See and William H. Mapes.
