OBITUARY:
DEATH WITHOUT WARNING
A Colored Barber Found Dead--Coroner's Inquest
Verdict, Heart Disease.
About 4 o'clock Sunday, June 22d, 1873, Samuel Johnson, a colored barber of this city was found lying dead in rear of his barber shop on Commercial street. On being informed of the circumstance, and in the absence of the Coroner, James Coffee, Esq., Justice of the Peace took charge of the body and had it conveyed temporarily to the city calaboose, and left in charge of John Warren.
Subsequently, Mr. Coffee summond six citizens to serve as a Coroner's jury and held an inquest, Dr. Payton was summoned to examine the body and ascertain the cause of the death. After hearing his professional opinion, the following was rendered as the Verdict of the Jury: Salem, June 22, 1873 "We the jury, summoned to hold an inquest on the body of Samuel Johnson who died in the city of Salem, Marion county, June 22, 1873, find that the deceased came to his death by the rupture of a blood vessel that caused his death immediately. Signed-M. M. Mead, Thos. J. Calloway, S. Krolick, N. Haas, Wm. Graves, Peter Bilyou."
Other Particulars.
Johnson was born in South Woodstock, Windom county, Connecticut in the year 1827, and was 42 years and 10 months old. He had no relatives in Oregon and left no means to defray the expense of his burial, and Mr. Coffee, therefore caused the body to be decently buried at the expense of the county. Johnson had been drinking some the preceding night and during Sunday; and when found, it was at first supposed that he was merely drunk. A couple of men, who discovered him lying upon his face on the platform or steps in rear of the shop, picked him up and carried him into the shop, when it was discovered that he was either dying or dead. Medical aid was summoned but before the physician arrived, he was dead.
He had been during the day sky-larking with a German known as "Dutch Jo" or "Lager Beer Jo," and once or twice he had threated to whip Jo and had struck him, appearing to be greatly excited. These circumstances led to the arrest of Jo, but upon hearing the evidence before the Coroner's Jury, he was at once discharged.
