1920 OR CENSUS - Leon A. Sawyer, age 32, occupation carpenter, b. Wisconsin, is enumerated with his wife Rose, age 29, b. Pennsylvania, along with children Dorothy, age 9, b. Pennsylvania, Rose M., age 4, b. Oregon, and Ruth age 2, b. Oregon.

NOTE wife Rose Mary (Bailey) Franke was previously married to Charles G. Franke. They were the parents of Dorothy May Franke who was born 6 Nov 1910 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania [Pennsylvania birth records, Ancestry.com] and appears as daughter Dorothy Sawyer in the 1920 and 1930 census. Rose Mary remarried 14 Feb 1935 in Multnomah co, Oregon to Chester B. O’Neill [Oregon marriage index]. She died 17 July 1968 in Multnomah co, Oregon [ODI] and was buried in Belcrest Cemetery.

OBITUARY: 

Leon Albert Sawyer was born in Arlington, Wis., November 23, 1887. He came to Gervais, Ore., with his parents in 1905 and had since been a resident of this state.
Mr. Sawyer was married to Rose Franks in June, 1914, who with four little daughters, Dorothy, Rosemary, Ruth and Marjorie are left to mourn his loss. Besides his immediate family he leaves his parents. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Sawyer of Gervais, one brother, Lewis R. Sawyer of Silverton and five sisters, Mrs. William Oddie, Mrs. Archie Wiesner, Mrs. Sherman Richard, Mrs. Kenneth Coomler, all of Gervais, and Mrs. Charles Eagleson of Eddyville, Ore.
Mr. Sawyer was a loving husband and father, a loyal friend and will be sorely missed in the family circle.
He was drowned in the Willamette river near Salem September 19 while trying to rescue the boat in which his little daughter Ruth was drifting away. His body was recovered Tuesday evening, Sept. 28, after days of faithful watching by relatives and friends.

Card of Thanks. We desire to express our heartfelt thanks to all the kindness and assistance shown by neighbors and friends during the sad circumstances of our husband, son and brother’s death. We wish especially wish to thank the men from the paper mill who so loyally and ably assisted in helping find the body. Also our appreciation of the beautiful floral offerings and fine music.
