OBITUARY:
DeVOISAN -- In Salem, Oregon, Feb. 18th, 1886, of old age, Louis DeVoisan, aged about 86 years. He was better known to residents here as "French Louis" and has lived for a long time in a little cabin at the lower end of Commercial street. He has been a ward of the county for several years, and has lived the life of a hermit all that time. He has not been feeling well for three or four days and Mrs. Parmenter has been ministering to his wants. She wanted to leave a night-watch with Louis Tuesday night, but he would not consent. He said, "Lock the door from the outside, and you may find me dead in the morning." He had said the same thing several times before, and this time he hit it. He was found dead yesterday morning when the neighbors went in. He will have a decent burial in the I. O. O. F. cemetery today. Funeral from F. J. Babcock's undertaking establishment. Weekly Oregon Statesman, Feb. 19, 1886, 8:4. From Friday's Daily -- Louis DeVoisan --This man, who died in his little cabin, all alone, on Tuesday night, has a history, which, if it could be gotten at, would prove very interesting reading. He claimed to have been a wholesale dry goods merchant in New York several years ago, and he also claimed to have sold the first invoice of imported dry goods to A. T. Stewart, the late great dry goods king, that Stewart later offered for sale from his shelves. He afterwards failed and came to this coast, and has lived here in Salem over twenty years. He was of good birth and a native of Switzerland. He was very proud and would not let his people know his condition. It is not known whether he was ever married or not. From his evidence here he had done nothing but odd jobs, but for the past few years he has been living at the expense of the county and of a few business men. Weekly Oregon Statesman, Feb. 26, 1886, 8:1.
