OBITUARY:

CARTOONIST WADE DIES AT HOME
Murray Wade, 85, prominent as a cartoonist, journalist and historian, died unexpectedly Saturday night at the home, 852 Liberty Street NE.  A heart attack was the apparent cause.
Wade, whose family was among the earliest settlers in Salem, died in the same house in which he was born.  One of the ventures for which Wade was best known was his cartoons of Oregon legislators--a feature for many sessions.  He earlier worked as editorial cartoonist for the newspapers in San Francisco and Portland.
Wade was publisher of the Ortegon Magazine for some 45 years.  For the past 15 years he had written the syndicated "Capitol Parade" for papers around the state. Wade was a former president of Marion County Historical Society.
Murray Wade, 85, who died here Saturday night, was known from the time he was a youth for his ability with drawing pens and pencils.  Among Wade's most popular features was a series of legislative sketches done over many sessions.  His discerning eye and deft touch pictured in caricature literally hundreds of men who guided Oregon's government through the years.
One of the Salem native's proudest memories was one getting a letter of recommendation for his cartooning ability from Homer Davenport, the world famous New York cartoonist who once lived in Silverton.  Wade worked as an editorial cartoonist on the old San Francisco Post and Examiner and later on the old Portland News and News Telegram.
Among his claims to fame were 20,000 sketches of personages of vaudeville, done on newspaper assignment, when that type of entertainment was in its heyday.
BUD FISHER COLLEAGUE
In his younger years in San Francisco, Wade was a colleague of such eventual household names as Bud Fisher (Mutt & Jeff) and Rube Goldberg.  Wade's hand caricatured many show people in the days before they "hit it big."  Among them were Ed Wynn, Leo Carrillo, Al Jolson, Leon Errol, Charlie Chaplin, Billie Burke. Other subjects for his pencil included Stepin Fetchit, Tom Mix and Buddy Baer, store magnate J. C. Penney, Author Harold Davis and Poet Carl Sandburg.
STARS USED SKETCHES
Many stars later used Wade's sketches for promotion pieces in "Variety," the theatrical trade magazine.  In fact it was said of Wade that he probably had more of his work in "Variety" than any other artist of that day.
Wade often recalled that in his newspaper cartooning days running shoes were a part of staff artists' equipment.  That was in the days before development of photo-engraving and it was up to the artist to run to fire or accident, quickly sketch it, and race back to beat the deadline.  The cartoonist, who lived here for many years, turned more and more to the writing end in later life. He published the Oregon Magazine for a long period and wrote the syndicated Capitol Parade about capitol doings for a number of weekly papers.
WAS DRIVING FORCE
He was a driving force in the Marion County Historical Society and was a former president of that group.  Considered an authority on historical subjects of the area, Wade was a major factor in saving the old Lee Parsonage from destruction.
Wade had been in failing health but was reasonably active up to his death.  Born Sept. 27, 1876, at 852 N. Liberty St., in the same house in which he died, he was the son of pioneer Salem merchant William Lincoln Wade and Melinda Jane Neal Wade.  The store building still in use, is just north of the Wade home.
Wade is survived by the widow, the former Gladys Mills; whom he married Dec. 15, 1925, at Vancouver, Wash., son, Murray Jr., Portland; daughter, Betty Jane Shaw, Portland; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Virgil T. Golden Chapel, with interment at Salem Pioneer Cemetery.
