OBITUARY: Peter Furukawa April 28, 1925 - March 23, 1997.
GASTON -- Peter Furukawa, 71, formerly of Salem, died Sunday at a local hospital. Born and raised in Salem, he moved to Gaston in 1938. He served in the Army during World War II. He married Margaret "Marge " Peck on Dec. 13, 1953, in Portland. Except for the time he served in the Army, he worked in the farming industry growing onions. He was a member of the Hillsboro Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2666 and served as a member of the Wapato Improvement District. He enjoyed fishing, clamming, and crabbing.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret "Marge"; sons Calvin Furukawa of Hillsboro, Peter A. "Tony" Furukawa, of Gaston, Dennis Furukawa of Willamina, and Edward Bromme of North Plains, Oregon; brother Nobi, of Gaston; sisters, Rose Kusumoto of San Diego, Amy Furumasu of Spokane, Washington, and Jessie Jensen of Portland, and 10 grandchildren. Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, in Forest Grove Memorial Chapel, Forest Grove. A Flag honor will be under the direction of American Legion Washington Post No. 2, Forest Grove. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in Forest Grove Memorial Chapel for Peter Furukawa, who died March 23 at age 71.
Mr. Furukawa was born April 28, 1925, in Salem. He was reared in Salem and Gaston. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Margaret Peck in 1952 and farmed in Gaston. He grew onions for nearly 60 years.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Calvin of Hillsboro, Peter A. ''Tony'' of Gaston, Dennis of Willamina and Edward Bromme of North Plains; brother, Nobi of Gaston; sisters, Rose Kusumoto of San Diego, Amy Furumasu of Spokane and Jessie Jensen of Portland; and 10 grandchildren.
Interment will be private. The family suggests remembrances to the Gaston Fire Department.
